BIRDS

“Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.”
Langston Hughes

CARMINE BEE EATERS

Close to the lodge I manage every year from approximately August to early December the Carmine Bee-Eaters make their annual pilgrimage to next in the banks of the river. As they build the nests excavating long tunnels in the banks the setting sun perfectly highlights the golden specks of dust and orangey pink hues of their wings.

If you are brave enough you can descend down to the rivers edge on a hippo highway, allowing the birds to be lit up as they enter and exit the nests on the bank creating one of the prettiest colour palettes of the Zambian bush.

Puffin

As you may have read I am from Scotland and it hasn’t just been the exotic wildlife of the African continent that caught my eye. These beautiful birds and arguably one of Scotland’s most colourful inhabitants also deserve a treasured space in this birders heart!
